Wisetalks: Robert Karjel

We all want to be someone to be reckoned with. And we know what that means. When life takes a turn for the worse, when the pressure mounts at work or in everyday life - we know exactly who will be there. Who will step forward. Can you be someone to count on and can you mentally prepare for it?

Yes, it can be done. But first we need to understand how we work as humans. When faced with challenges, the brain instinctively reacts with flight or fight. It takes awareness and courage to stay put, to think differently - to do the right thing, even when it's hard.

In his lecture "Become someone to reckon with", Robert Karjel shares stories from a life filled with challenges, responsibilities and unexpected encounters. As a former helicopter pilot and lieutenant colonel in the Swedish Armed Forces, he has been at the centre of events - from rescue operations during the Estonia disaster to missions against pirates off the coast of Somalia. These experiences have given him a unique insight into what builds trust, leadership and human strength when it really matters. He is a civil engineer in technical physics, author of Out of Kabul 2023 and Become Someone to Count on 2024 and one of Sweden's most appreciated lecturers.

With warmth, humour and thoughtfulness, Robert weaves drama with insights on courage, responsibility and cooperation. He shows how, even under pressure, we can find focus and confidence, and how we can become someone others can truly trust.

The result is an experience that inspires reflection and action, and reminds us that leadership is fundamentally about being there for others. About daring to face uncertainty, standing up for your values and creating meaning in what you do - whether you lead a team, an organisation or yourself.
