City Centre of the Year 2023

Malmö is a city with a strong focus on sustainability, collaboration and innovation, which has created a city centre characterised by constant renewal and development. Thanks to a stable and long-term organisation in Malmö Citysamverkan, as well as a tradition of collaboration between different parties, we have created the conditions for renewal and testing new ideas. This has resulted in many collaborative projects, which have attracted new businesses and increased the number of visitors. During the heyday of the shipbuilding era, around 6000 people worked at Kockums. Today, at least as many people work in the same geography, but instead in about 400 companies. This diversity of companies creates a dynamic place where there is room for different industries and niches to grow and interact.

In Malmö, we dare to test and make mistakes, in order to find new solutions and opportunities. Investments in the city centre have been made for many years and will continue in the future, creating the conditions for continued growth and development. Some cities focus on few but large-scale solutions. In Malmö, however, there is diversity. Both in terms of population and how the city develops. Here, the many ideas, the many solutions, the many identities are developed by the many but different people. Malmö is a city for and by people. We have a city centre that is created by many, where different perspectives and ideas merge to create interesting projects and unique places. This has resulted in a vibrant and attractive city centre, which is well visited and appreciated by Malmö residents, local businesses and visitors alike.

In parallel with the usual management, we keep a constant eye on the world, conditions and developments - an approach that promotes diversity and creativity, while generating results that are both overall for the entire city centre and for specific projects. The results include more visitors, more housing, an increased population, successful communication, a stronger organisation, efforts in the urban environment, increased cooperation and positive developments for local businesses and the tourism industry.

The city centre is characterised by a strong sense of community and together we continue to keep the pot boiling to further develop a city centre that is sustainable, innovative, forward-looking and welcoming to all. Thanks to Malmö's strong focus on sustainability and inventiveness, the city centre has also become a role model for other cities, which further strengthens the city's attractiveness.

That's why Malmö wants to be City Centre of the Year in 2023.
