She was the queen of jazz, the actress with a twinkle in her eye and a voice that could be both silky smooth and as sharp as a pinprick. Monica Zetterlund – one of Sweden’s greatest and most beloved artists of all time. Her music, humour and unique style have forever etched her into the Swedish national consciousness. Following an acclaimed and sold-out spring tour across Sweden, the hit show celebrating her life and musical legacy is now back, and on 1 October the tribute show comes to Slagthusets Teater.
In “Simple, Beautiful, Tender – A tribute to Monica Z” Frida Öhrn, together with Carl Bagge and his trio, takes the audience on a journey through Monica Zetterlund’s life, her artistry and her timeless repertoire. Experience a warm and lively evening in the spirit of Monica – from her collaborations with Hasse & Tage, Beppe Wolgers and Povel Ramel, to the magical encounters with Bill Evans that took her all the way to New York’s jazz clubs.
It promises to be an evening filled with humour, charisma and musical brilliance, featuring several of Monica’s original arrangements unearthed from the archives. These arrangements were written by Lasse Bagge, who played with Monica for many years – and which are now being given a new lease of life in the hands of his son, Carl. ‘Simple, Beautiful, Tender’ is a loving tribute to an icon – and a reminder of just how timeless Monica Zetterlund’s voice and music still are.
