At Christmas 1983, a two-storey detached house in the woods outside Norrköping is shaken by a violent row, and a secret slips out of a mother’s mouth. A seven-year-old boy called Andrev learns that his dad isn’t his real dad. His real dad lives in a country far away and has hair down to his shoulders. “Like an Indian,” says his mum, gesturing towards her elbow so that the boy will understand. The boy’s heart races because it’s the best news he’s ever heard. It feels as though he’s the boy in a book about a boy who finds out that his dad is king of a magical land and that a spirit is coming to take him there. But no spirits come – just new dads who aren’t his.
