Malmö Market Hall

The vision of creating a market hall in Malmö has long been in the minds of Martin and Nina Karyd, the siblings behind the family-owned property company Annabostäder. As food lovers, they felt that something was missing. So when the old Godsmagasinet on Gibraltargatan - which had been empty since the last train left in 1955 - appeared on the market, the siblings jumped at the chance. The premises were perfect for running a market hall. The dream would finally become a reality.

Together with Gert Wingårdh and his architectural firm, Martin and Nina began to put their vision on paper. Materials were chosen with great care. Malmö Saluhall was to be characterised by quality while creating a sense of contrast and harmony. Everything was done with respect for the warehouse and its 19th century origins. The plan was not to change too much, but instead to reinforce the character of the warehouse with modern details in an industrial design. Visitors were to be taken back in time to the market halls, slaughterhouses and milk shops of the period.

A new extension was designed and adorned with a Corten steel facade. Outside, space was made for market trading and outdoor seating. In 2014, the planning proposal was finalised and, at the same time as construction started, work began on filling the premises with around 20 traders.

The content of the market hall had to be shaped at its own pace. The important thing was not to fill the premises quickly, but to find a good mix of traditional over-the-counter goods and modern dining experiences. What all the players had in common was that they were passionate about what they did. Together, they were able to create a place where everyone could meet and feel good.

While all this was happening on the inside, from the outside you could watch the 50-metre-long building slowly transform into a food destination for foodies, hungry lunchers and passionate cooks. On 11 November 2016, the doors to Malmö Saluhall opened. Ready to welcome food lovers from all corners of the world.
